(the 4th trimester) Surviving Twins

January 2, 2014

3 months, we made it!

9 months ago, when we found out that we were having twins, I told myself we would not be those twin parents that speak of ‘surviving’ the babies’ first year. (Ha!) We would enjoy it, appreciate those precious moments; savor.

Consider those words eaten. Even devoured.  I have no idea how I ever complained about my daughter.

I suppose it’s all relative.

Definitely feeling like a mom, though.

But I believe pray the worst of the sleep deprivation is behind us & that we have made it through what many would properly describe as the fourth trimester. Looking back at the past 13 wks is truly a blur. Each day felt like 3 days in one lens, yet at the same time here we are in January. Time is both a blessing & a curse, so I reflect on how I survived before I throw that word out of my vocabulary.

I really don’t need to explain this one. Except that some mornings I would avoid it in hopes of sneaking in a nap. You know, that whole “sleep when the baby sleeps” BS.

There’s a lot more work for the dad with twins, that’s for sure.  He loves his kids, and me; I’m very lucky.  Oh, and he gave me a lovely mothers necklace for my birthday…perfect.

Try breastfeeding twins (or don’t) & you will learn the importance of oatmeal. I like this winter one this time of year, but I’m really not picky.

Another self-explanatory handicap.

Mimi, mom, friend. She has selflessly donated a LOT of her time to help & I am so grateful.

Swaddling, rockers & zipper sleepers.

Get a tight swaddle (arms in!), buy these Rock n Plays and always pick the sleeper with zippers, if you can.

Sleep. (Or lack thereof)

I’m constantly thinking, reading, dreaming of sleep. The first 10 weeks the boys were eating.  Every. Three. Hours.  (explicative.)  This post pretty much sums up what I’ve learned.

Chocolate can solve most problems. The sleep deprivation, lack of energy meant I was searching for candy all day long. I made this chocolate chip skillet cookie, including a peanut butter version, frequently.

Friends & Family.

I’m blessed with the most loving family & a great circle of friends. My fam came for thanksgiving, my in-laws visited for Christmas & 3 of my life-long friends visited for my birthday. Blessed. Our thankful tree only partially tells the story.  And, I’m pretty sure my Christmas card wall will stay up for an extra month.

I am testing out as many fast recipes as I can, like this, because I have to, and cooking soups, like this, because I want to.

And trying new recipes.

Our families visited us for the holidays. Holidays equal food (& extra hands to hold babies)!

My New Years resolution is to enjoy each day for all it’s craziness. No more “surviving” or whining about sleep (I realize I’m always going to be a little bit tired). 2014 is going to be a great awesome year. More change means more growth & experiences.

Cheers to that & happy 3 months, boys.

I loved reading this! And seeing the boys in those handsome shirts! Love you guys. Can’t wait for our growing groups at Dinner Club and those much needed alcoholic laughs. Your blogs always leave me feeling like I’ve just had a mini me moment.

So many good things in this post! I feel pretty honoured to be reading your adventure over the past few months. I can imagine how exhausting it’d be to have three little ones, Aaron and I don’t even have one yet (and the prospect is pretty daunting as is! We want kids but I’m admittedly pretty overwhelmed at the thought also). Love your family picture. Thanks for sharing these moments with us xx
